6 must do activities for the ultimate garden route road trip:

1. Seasonal whale watching in hermanus

Every year, from June to December, the Southern Right Whales migrate their way through South Africa’s southern coastlines from the Antarctic for mating and breeding. Hermanus is known for being one of the 12 best whale-watching destinations in the world so you are sure to see these majestic beauties splashing their way through the coast. You can also book a tour by boat and see them up close and personal on a guided marine safari.

2. Wilde braam berry estate

Known as Swellendam’s “berried treasure,” the Wilde Braam Berry Estate stuns and delights its visitors with picturesque views, the opportunity to pick your own blackberries and youngberries and tasting unique South African liqueurs. The estate also includes a farm stall where visitors can purchase delicious condiments, jams, relishes, fruits and vegetable, and more.

3. Mossel bay zipline

This one is for the adrenaline junkies. The Mossel Bay Zipline is the longest over-the-ocean zipline in the world! No experience is needed and the friendly staff will strap you up for an adventure you are unlikely to forget. We recommend wearing closed shoes and comfy clothing that can be secured to ensure your safety and comfort as you fly over the ocean.

4. Mossel bay point of human origin

Transport yourself back in time at this world renowned archaeological cave site. Stand on the same ground, experience views and touch tools that our ancestors of nearly 160 000 years ago laid their eyes and hands on. Wooden steps and walkways will windle you through the past through magnificent clifftops and inside stunning caves. Experiencing the Point of Human Origin guided tours is sure to be a holiday highlight.

5. Wilderness beach

More than 9km of stretched out white sand, the Wilderness Beach is a kite surfer’s paradise and perfect for those wanting to take a long walk on the beach. The Touw Estuary cuts through the beach, which makes for magnificent views and crafts an explorers paradise. Pack your picnic basket and bask in the sun, this beach is a true gem of the Garden Route.

6. Kaaiman’s river bridge

This iconic heritage site presents an awe-inspiring picture. Located on the Kaaimansgat Pass, this is a popular lookout point that bring you the best of both sea and indigenous forest views.
